For so many years, health experts have endlessly argued over a certain topic: Should consumers buy organic food or not? There are lots of reasons why you may want to opt for organic food. However, does the label (and price tag) actually prove that the food is healthier? No, it doesn’t. It simply means that veggies, fruits, nuts, and grains don’t undergo genetic modification nor irradiation (treatment with radiation to eliminate bacteria) and are not grown with artificial pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, when cows and chickens are labelled ‘organic', it means that they were allowed to graze freely during their lifetime and didn’t receive any growth hormones or antibiotics.

Should You Buy Organic Food?

It may be difficult to access organic food sometimes, due to its cost or some other reasons. However, we recommend that you buy organic food whenever you can, to protect your health and make the planet safer. Actually, the amount of pesticide residue found in conventional food is within legal limits. However, even a tiny fraction of these chemicals may have an effect on your health, and could increase gradually as you keep consuming non-organic food.

It’s hard to say what amount of pesticide residue is considered ‘dangerous' to the health. Ideally, a healthy diet would have no pesticides in it. That’s why we have organic foods. Nonetheless, buying organic food largely depends on your budget and ethics. If you don’t have enough money to buy organic foods, don’t feel bad about consuming nonorganic food.

Is Organic Food A Healthier Option?

The way we grow our food matters a lot and has a great impact on our health. Organic foods are healthier options because they are cultivated without the use of artificial pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. On the other hand, agricultural chemicals are sprayed on regular crops during cultivation, and chemical residues remain in the crop till a consumer eats it. This could make the consumer fall sick. For Instance, glyphosate, the major ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, has been described as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Organic and non-organic foods have almost the same amount of nutrients in them, and organic foods are neither healthier nor safer than non-organic foods. The most recent Pesticide Data Program (PDP) results from the USDA revealed that over 99% of the samples of non-organic produce tested contained pesticide residues, well below the levels established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as safe to eat. Almost half of the produce tested had no noticeable pesticide residue in them.

Basically, experts agree that buying organic food is a personal choice which is largely influenced by your budget, ethics and health concerns. However, they also suggest that eating fruits and vegetables is important.
